Many DTM drivers consider the Zandvoort circuit to be their favourite. Not only does the Dutch track offer sandy beaches and seaside views, it is also extremely challenging to drive. The unique mix of fast and slow sections is a guarantee for exciting racing. For Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller, this circuit is also where the German celebrated some of the highlights of his career.
Rocky secured his maiden DTM victory at the North Sea coast. In 2011, the Neuwied-born driver won here in the Netherlands on his 44th race start in the DTM. After qualifying third, Rocky drove impeccably to take the win after a perfect pit strategy.
This success was topped in 2013: After nine races of the season, Rocky secured the DTM drivers’ championship. A second-place finish for the then 29-year-old at the dune-banked track was sufficient to take the championship. This also marked Phoenix Racing’s second title victory in three years, after securing the championship in 2011.
Zandvoort is also where Rockenfeller last made his way to the top step of the podium in the DTM. In Sunday’s 2017 race the Audi driver showed a fierce performance and celebrated the first place. Lo?c Duval also climbed onto the podium in second place, clinching a double success for Phoenix Racing and Audi.
