DTM Finale: Rockenfeller runner-up after a great charge

In the penultimate race of the 2017 DTM season, Mike Rockenfeller impressed with a great forward charge. The Phoenix driver started the race from seventh position on the grid and remained in contention with the front group up until the middle portion of the race. Rockenfeller, in contrast with his opponents in front of him, pitted later in the race. This meant that Rockenfeller was able to put his newer tyres to good use. He set the fastest lap before overtaking Timo Glock (BMW) on the final lap to finish in second place behind brand colleague Jamie Green. Teammate Loïc Duval did not have the necessary pace and finished eighteenth.

Mattias Ekström, race winner Jamie Green, René Rast and Mike Rockenfeller – still have chances of clinching the drivers’ title on Sunday. Following cautions, Ekström and Green have received five- and ten-place grid penalties, respectively, for Sunday.

“It’s great to receive 20 points, especially with only one race remaining. But we are within striking distance for a podium finish. That’s why we will do our best again tomorrow and see if there is still a chance,” said Rockenfeller.

Drivers’ standings after 17 of 18 races:
1 Mattias Ekström 172 points
2 Jamie Green 163 points
3 René Rast 159 points
4 Mike Rockenfeller 152 points
